The importance of coaching for new innovative managers (1)

Reality demonstrates that a manager's position in the workplace is uniquely challenging. Leadership is managing and leading individuals and/or teams. The manager is required to constantly produce results through others. A manager is expected to be effective in several key skills (i.e., planning, directing, reporting, coordinating, motivating, problem solving and communicating). Additionally, the manager must have the ability to inspire confidence in those that they are responsible for as well as in their superior. Unfortunately, today's managers are often promoted without any formal training in management. They are automatically expected to know the corresponding skills and the communicating "rules" without the benefit of formal training or years of experience. These and other important factors convey the significance of career coaching for new innovative managers.

It is very unfortunate and important to note that management is often criticized for having the desire to upgrade their leadership and communication skills. Managers gracefully risk the possibility of appearing incompetent or weak when requesting objective feedback on their personal management styles. However, this strategy will actually be effective for many aspiring and innovative managers. Consequently, management may encounter several unfortunate situations that may induce ineffectiveness. Although managers need to produce results through others, they often struggle with lack of cooperation. The managers are apprehensive about obtaining the 'title' and the responsibility, due to the fact that they aren't provided the necessary power or authority. Additionally, the managers may assume this role, yet they are clearly anxious about making a big impact quickly. Upon achieving the role as a manager, many struggle to maintain their position while building and leading an effective team. More so, the manager often requires assistance and support with mastering some of the basic management skills including staff management/motivation, team building, prioritizing, coordinating, problem solving and scheduling. Basically, it is a constant battle to maintain a manager's position within the power- hierarchy.
